Dylan Bell and Suba Sankaran make up the dynamic a cappella duo, FreePlay. In 1993, they met at York University in Toronto and became fast friends and musical colleagues when they co-directed a choir together. Over a short period of time, this blossomed into a much deeper relationship. In 1999, at the choir concert, Dylan proposed to Suba. They wed the following year. Fast forward to the current day: Dylan and Suba are now international touring artists who just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary, and want to celebrate with you! Both Canadians, they came from very different cultural backgrounds, but music brought them together, and love broke down the barriers. Everything they learned about marriage they learned from music: breathing, listening, finding harmony through dissonance, counterpoint, call and response, leading, and the art of accompaniment.
Traversing centuries of music and multiple styles, this couple revels in finding innovative ways to arrange music for two voices. The music included in this show includes classical favourites by Johann Sebastian Bach and Edvard Grieg, as well as original material.
This Spot On Story is a musical love story of how Dylan and Suba met, and how they live and love together through music. With spoken text and live music performance excerpts, experience how two voices become one song.
