As part of Culturapedia’s Strategic Touring Libraries Project, Culturapedia commissioned Blackburn based artist and digital illustrator Cath Ford to take a tour on Lancashire’s mobile libraries, meet the driver/librarians, talk to their enthusiastic users and take in the beautiful Lancashire countryside that they cover. Cath’s response was a blog and a stunning series of illustrations that have been made into posters, bookmarks and bookbags for users to use.
Mobile libraries are very special and encourage close and intimate relationships between driver librarians and their customers. They are also compact and only really visible to people in isolated parts of Lancashire. After considered deliberation we concluded that a digital/illustrative commission was the best way to include the mobiles in the project as a whole and celebrate the daily encounters that make people’s days. A series of four posters and beautiful bookmarks is being distributed to all Lancashire libraries with bags being given to mobile library users. The illustrations will also be published on the Spot On website this Autumn as an inaugural digital presentation. Cath documented her process through a blog: https://drawingstoriesblog.wordpress.com
